The Peaceful Dog - 5.0 Rating on Google

Get to know them!

“The Peaceful Dog was founded by dog trainer and behavior counselor Lauren Camerini with a simple goal: to help New York City dogs and their parents learn to live and thrive together in a peaceful and respectful environment.

The Peaceful Dog’s approach is based upon Lauren’s Whole Dog Philosophy—we heal the “whole dog,” not just the problem that the dog may be presenting. While basic manners training and behavior modification are the focus of our practice, every consultation includes a discussion of your dog’s overall quality of life, including nutrition, exercise, and enrichment activities. The Peaceful Approach is:

Holistic: We treat the whole dog and not simply a specific behavior.

City-Centric: Lauren Camerini is a born-and-bred New Yorker who understands the demands of city living with dogs, as well as the needs of savvy, sophisticated dog parents.

Personalized: Our services are highly customized to meet the unique needs of each dog and dog parent. Director of Training Lauren Camerini is intimately involved with each case. She is available to her clients 24/7.

Advanced: Our science-based, research-backed methodologies are cemented in Learning Theory (the science of how mammals learn) and Ethology (the study of animal behavior). We are up-to-date with current research on canine cognition, and regularly attend continuing education seminars.

Experienced: Our expertise is backed by training, certifications, and the hands-on experience that you and your dogs deserve.

NYC pet care for NYC dogs.”

Laurens Leash 5.0 Rating on Google

“Here’s what you should know before choosing me as your dog trainer

Why I’m a Dog Trainer and Behavior Consultant

It would be easy to just say I love dogs and am fascinated by dog behavior. Both are true. But what really led me to choose training as my life’s work is the joy I get from making change for my clients.

Dog training and behavior modification are really about problem solving—finding creative ways for both human and canine alike to make change in the midst of our real, complex lives. (If you have time to slow down and learn how to train, and the luxury of easily changing life routines and habits, it would all be relatively easy.) But good dog trainers understand that we don’t work in a laboratory setting—we have to find realistic solutions that reflect the realities of the busy lives our clients lead. And that’s where things get really interesting.

I love working with each dog and human duo to figure out the most elegant and practical solution for getting the job done. There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing things really start to gel—to see the dog begin to “get it” and the human able to take more joy from their dog.

I’d love to teach you how to get the behavior you want from your dog. Or if you’re frustrated with a difficult behavior problem or need to achieve your goals more quickly I’m delighted to provide even more support by doing the training myself. I’m a professional dog trainer, after all!”

CHELSEA

DogRelations NYC - 5.0 Rating on Google

Get to know them!

“At DogRelations we specialize in teaching dogs and puppies to choose the behaviors you’d like your dog to display because it pays off for both of you. That way the process is always fun and interesting.

Basic skills such as “sit” “come” and “stay or settle” really are only useful when they can be integrated into your interactions throughout the day. In other words “sit” is not a trick that your dog performs but is an offered behavior. Teaching your dogs to take cues from the environment and your body language is far more useful than having to remind or nag your dog all the time.

DogCognition research has taught us that dogs learn very well socially, respond to pointing and eye movements. Strategic placement and timing of rewards allow the dog to find an understanding of what is being communicated to them on their own. By allowing the dog to figure out on their own what is being communicated not only builds self-confidence in the dog but truly motivates them to find what works the most in their favor.

Science has proven that rewarded (or reinforced) behaviors increase in frequency. With that in mind we can choose which behaviors we, the humans want to reinforce. Those behaviors might not be what your dog innately offers: jumping up, using their mouth to experiment and explore and other natural canine quirks we humans might consider a nuisance) but they can be redirected into behaviors we consider more acceptable by teaching and rewarding replacement behaviors that the dog will gladly offer.”

Perfect Behavior Dog Training - 5.0 Rating on Google

Get to know them!

Hi, I'm Jay Andors, KPA-CTP!

I’ve worked with thousands of dogs in New York City over the last twenty-three years. Beginning as a professional groomer with my own business on the Upper West Side, I trained dogs to cooperate in their own self-care, shaping their behaviors to turn the stress of grooming into a positive experience. Next, I transferred these skills – including a lot of patience – to my professional dog training business.

In 2013, I decided to take my training to the highest level. I worked with Karen Pryor and Ken Ramirez at Karen Pryor Academy, one of the most widely respected and challenging dog training programs in the country, and became a Certified Training Partner. Karen’s influence in the animal world is legendary. Her method of force-free training and positive reinforcement provides the foundation for my personal dog training philosophy, one I bring to my work with dogs every single day:

It's possible to change and shape a dog’s behavior – no matter their age.

Positive reinforcement brings the best – and longest-lasting – results.

A dog’s unwanted behaviors can be redirected through careful observation, assessment, and a specific training plan.

Ignoring mistakes and focusing on the positives sets everyone – owners and dogs – up for success.

Behavior changes occur by reaching small attainable steps – until the desired finished behavior change is achieved.

Behavior changes occur one step at a time up a staircase to success.

Real change in behavior can be developed quickly through consistency and repetition in just a few minutes a day.

Dogs love learning – and dog training should be fun.”

Click the link to view Leigh’s resume, which includes the intensive training workshops and courses she has attended. Leigh is full-time dog trainer and behavior consultant, working with dogs who have fear and aggression-related behavior issues. She works privately with owners to teach basic obedience, and teaches the occasional obedience and tricks classes for puppies and dogs. Leigh has trained multiple species including horses (in her youth), chickens, and a few rats.

Animal Behavior Consulting has twin goals: first, to train dogs and their people while making the learning process enjoyable, and second, to demonstrate the use of pain-free, gentle, modern training methods to train dogs properly. Training should be fun for you AND for your dog just as it was for Allie and Leigh; training with Animal Behavior Consulting IS fun. Best of all, fun, creative training will build an enjoyable life-long relationship between you and your canine companion.”

Poodles to Pit Bulls Clicker Training, Inc. - 5.0 Rating on Google

“Based in Astoria, NY, I specialize in training for the pet dog. I teach a motivation-based method of dog training rooted in behavioral psychology that focuses on giving the learner choice. The dog training I do is geared towards coaching you how to be your dog's trainer, giving you the skills you need to succeed, and therefore is very flexible. I will make it work for you and your family - no two situations are the same. I work with all breeds, ages, temperaments, and sizes of dogs, as well as many types of behavior problems ranging from potty training, inappropriate barking, and leash walking, to fear-based behaviors that can lead to aggression and biting.

I will never ask you to do something painful or overtly stressful to your dog, and you are always welcome (and encouraged!) to ask questions. Dog training with me is focused on learning to read your dog's body language, setting them up to succeed, and rewarding good choices.

Gone but never forgotten, the original trio from left to right: Tigress, Emma, and Charlie.

I was originally pursuing a graduate degree in English Literature at the CUNY Graduate Center here in NYC. Charlie, my Miniature Poodle, was 6 years old at the time, and plagued with various behavioral issues, his most severe was clinical separation anxiety. I go over the details in the blog section, as well as how I dealt with it, but at his worst he collapsed his own trachea, had the police called, and even received hand written complaints from neighbors unhappy with his non-stop barking. He also destroyed the apartment, and urinated and defecated when left alone.

I decided to leave the world of literary academia to pursue dog training in 2009. Up until then I had informally trained Charlie to do a myriad of tricks and cute behaviors, and had worked at a kennel and with shelter dogs for years, but had no formal behavior training. I shadowed other trainers, and learned all I could in the following years. I dedicated myself to working with Charlie and his separation anxiety, and am happy to say that he began his recovery in 2010.

In 2011 I graduated with distinction from the Karen Pryor Academy and am very proudly a Certified Training Partner. I am currently enrolled in the Animal Behavior and Conservation Master's Program at Hunter College. I volunteer my services to several rescue groups, as well as low income families in NYC through the Pet Help Partners program through The Humane Society of the United States. In 2016 I began volunteer training with the Rikers Rovers program on Rikers Island, and ended up working there for over a year. In 2018 I began working with NYC Animal Care and Control to run community dog training classes that are free to the public in the Bronx, through their Community Pets Program. I also offer support to families looking for training options to avoid giving up their dog, and to families adopting dogs with special behavior needs from the shelter to ensure they handle the transition to family life as well as possible. I am constantly reading new dog training and behavior books, watching webinars, taking part in online behavior forums, and attending seminars. I have attended several Clicker Expos - if you've never been to a Clicker Expo, I highly recommend it! I recently also took on a mentee - he's brilliant with the dogs and learning all about the business. You may see him from time to time, tagging along during a session, handling one of my dogs during a reactive dog session, or acting as a decoy himself for dogs who need to make more human friends.

In 2015 I acquired Prynne, a Toy Australian Shepherd. She was privately rehomed because her previous owners couldn't keep up anymore. She was a tough puppy and wasn't socialized before she came to me, but has blossomed into a spectacular little dog and is working as my decoy dog. Late 2015 she had a terrible accident and ended up at the Animal Medical Center ICU for 2 weeks, but pulled through and is doing as well as ever, though with an esophageal stricture. If your dog has reactivity issues with other dogs - there's a good chance you'll get to meet her! She's also a phenomenal play therapy dog for select cases.

October 2017 someone shared a Facebook post of a handsome dog at a local shelter who was described as super social and very friendly. I went to go meet him, fell in love, brought Prynne up to meet him the next day, and ended up bringing him home with us. Eyre turned out to be the Best Dog Ever. He is an incredibly friendly, easy going, affable boy who has never met a stranger. He even went on some therapy visits with me to Rikers Island with the incarcerated youth and was a big hit, and is currently in the process of getting certified to bring his magic to more people in need. Eyre adores people of all ages, and is learning how to be a decoy dog as well. I sometimes wish I could clone him and send him out to families everywhere - everyone deserves a dog like Eyre! I hope you get to meet him too!”
